9.30am on a monday morning, volunteers from Clevedon Pride are out picking up rubbish around the town. This happens every week fifty two weeks of the year. On New Years Day volunteers were out in Queens Square sweeping up the debris of the night before.
There are two reasons that this has to happen.
1. The inability of some people to take their rubbish home or put it in a bin, the first thing that was picked up this morning in the Square was an abandoned pizza box. It was obviously too exhausting to walk ten yards to put it in the bin.
2. Some traders in the town who have very little sense of corporate responsibility beyond the front door. You know who you are ! If you are a shop selling ‘fast food’ put a bin outside your shop and keep your rubbish inside your premises until the contractors are ready to take it away.
If you are a very large supermarket, if you cannot afford to collect the plastic bags billowing around the town, make a donation to Clevedon Pride at Christmas towards the Christmas Lights and flowers. Other supermarkets do in the town.
Clevedon has a population of 22 000, Clevedon Pride at best has thirty volunteers, only by showing a bit of consideration can we stop the town looking a litter strewn mess.
Much of Clevedon Pride’s work is directed at a) Christmas Lights, b) planting. The latest hobby for some is to tip the planters over of a drunken weekend. Very funny, very clever do not think we are going to put up with this for much longer.
Thanks to everybody who told Anne and her team this morning what a great job they were doing.
