Clevedon Pride Doing Their Stuff

9.30am on a monday morning, volunteers from Clevedon Pride are out picking up rubbish around the town. This happens every week fifty two weeks of the year. On New Years Day volunteers were out in Queens Square sweeping up the debris of the night before.

There are two reasons that this has to happen.

1. The inability of some people to take their rubbish home or put it in a bin, the first thing that was picked up this morning in the Square was an abandoned pizza box. It was obviously too exhausting to walk ten yards to put it in the bin.

2. Some traders in the town who have very little sense of corporate responsibility beyond the front door. You know who you are ! If you are a shop selling ‘fast food’ put a bin outside your shop and keep your rubbish inside your premises until the contractors are ready to take it away.

If you are a very large supermarket, if you cannot afford to collect the plastic bags billowing around the town, make a donation to Clevedon Pride at Christmas towards the Christmas Lights and flowers. Other supermarkets do in the town.

Clevedon has a population of 22 000, Clevedon Pride at best has thirty volunteers, only by showing a bit of consideration can we stop the town looking a litter strewn mess.

Much of Clevedon Pride’s work is directed at a) Christmas Lights, b) planting.  The latest hobby for some is to tip the planters over of a drunken weekend. Very funny, very clever do not think we are going to put up with this for much longer.

Thanks to everybody who told Anne and her team this morning what a great job they were doing.

Pots of Flowers in the Square

So we’ve done it! Clevedon Pride, along with Clevedon Town Council, have brought a long-needed splash of colour to Queen’s Square in the latest phase of our campaign to make Clevedon a nicer place to live. About fifteen volunteers, aged from 2 to…. well, it would be indelicate to reveal the ages of our older volunteers, gathered over two mornings first to fill the twenty our so pots with compost, and then to plant them with an array of shrubs and flowers. Public support was overwhelming, with congratulations and expressions of goodwill came from many passers by, and the general opinion was that the planting had given the square a much-needed lift. Check out the video of the planting day below.

Flowers at Last!

One of Clevedon Pride’s principal aims will come to fruition tomorrow. Along with the Town Council, we are taking delivery of twenty planters for the square, to finally start the Clevedon in Bloom project. The planters are being filled tomorrow, and planted with flowers on Wednesday, by volunteers from Clevedon Pride and other groups in the town. Linda Knott and Angela Slotte have worked really hard on a planting plan and the Council have come up with £4000 to pay for the display, half of which is to be spent in this first phase. The remainder is to be used for some Autumn and Winter planting. If you’d like to help, let us know! You can comment at the bottom of this post.

Easter Fair a Huge Success

Our Easter Fair last Saturday has been declared a huge success, after raising over £1000 towards the Christmas lights. Sherry and Mary organised the fair, which included a huge Bric-a-Brac stall, a book stall, a cake stall, a Tombola and a raffle. Other Clevedon traders joined in, with the Veg Box, First Choice Travel, Morrisons and Lucy from Present Company making significant contributions towards both the success of the day and the Clevedon Pride coffers. Julie oganised some great entertainment from The Dance Factory, Lipgloss and a great young singer called Florence, which drew people into the square and also proved that the space can be used for many purposes. Many congratulations to Sherry and Mary. Let’s make this an annual event!

Here’s a link to the Mercury coverage of the event.
